O is for: OK...it's time. {plus, a chance at $1,000 in pampering}

OKAY.

I've been saying it for weeks...or maybe months. But I swear, I'm finally going to do it. And I'm going to lean on my faithful blog readers to hold me to my word.

I need to drop a few pounds.

There. I said it.

Yes, I realize that most of you will immediately chime in with: "Are you kidding me? You're tiny." Yes, I'm only 5'4" (on a good day). And yes, I carry my weight pretty well. But believe me, it's time. You know why I know it's time? I was running errands last week, sporting my oldest, most comfy pair of skinny jeans. As I was getting out of my car to fill it up with gas, I heard a terrifying sound. The sound of my jeans splitting. I blacked out from embarrassment for a second, but I'm fairly certain I let out a "NOOOOOOOOOO" when I discovered the gaping hole. Yes, they were old but I know exactly why they ripped. They were definitely tight, as are most of my clothes these days. And when your job involves appearing on national TV everyday, fitting into your clothes is pretty darn important.

I believe the main culprit to be this:

Alcohol. Generally it's sparkling wine as opposed to liters of German beer, but I felt this photo was more dramatic. First order of business is to cut this completely during my work week, for now at least, and have it in moderation on the weekends. Not sure I can give up the Irish cream in my coffee on my days off, but I'm going to try. I've also joined a gym and started going to a personal trainer. Of course, the personal training will only help if I actually make it to the gym on my own (so far, that's been a bit of a challenge), but again, this is all a work in progress, and I encourage you guys to hold me accountable!

In general, I eat pretty healthily. My go-to breakfast generally involves sauteed kale, chicken apple sausage or turkey bacon and an egg (runny yolk and all). I douse it with hot sauce and wash it down with coffee that has been sweetened with liquid sweetner and *sometimes* a little half and half. My trainer told me to remember the rule of thirds for meals: a third protein, a third leafy green veggies, and a third of complex carbs (so sometimes I do oatmeal or a sprouted grain English muffin).

I've also tried to start using the MyFitnessPal app on my iPhone. If you've never used it, I highly recommend checking it out. It helps keep track of calories and sort of holds you accountable for what you're eating at breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Speaking of which, my biggest problem has been making sure I eat snacks throughout the day (and I'm talking healthy snacks like fruit or nuts...not nachos or quesadillas when I get home at 3 in the morning from work). I'm really digging the Slim-Fast Peanut Butter crunch bars right now... they're sort of like a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup but good for you and only 100 calories. Simple is best...especially when you're trying to lose weight!

What about you guys? Any of my readers out there trying to lose weight? Tell me your most embarrassing weight-related story! (Ever had to ask a 19-year-old dressing room clerk for a larger size? Ever looped a rubberband through your jeans because you couldn't zip them? Ever had control top garments cut off the oxygen to your legs? You get the idea...) If so, please leave a comment below and tell me the craziest reason you've had for trying to lose weight and/or what you're doing to accomplish your goals. Entries will be pooled between participating blogs and two lucky winners will be picked randomly to win a $1,000 SpaFinder gift card! Because...when you're working hard to drop the lbs, you deserve a little pampering!

In the meantime, I'll try to post more healthy meals and recipe ideas here on the blog and let you know how it's going. Wish me luck!

  1. I highly recommend using a heart rate monitor that works to your smart phone ("Polar" makes one for ~$40). There are apps that can create graphs/records of your heart rate, estimate calories burned (and % of calorie from fat burned), keep track of your best metrics so you can try to set goals like breaking your own records, etc. Some such apps (I use "Digifit") can link up with your Fitness Pal account and you can more easily see your calories burned vs calories eaten all in the same place and then set personal goals like burning extra calories on the days that you eat extra calories. Best of luck losing a few pounds I'm sure you will have no trouble. I also still love the blog, keep it up :)

  2. I wish you well! Sadly, I too have had to become a weekend warrior when it comes to alcohol. :(

  3. I've never had an embarrassing weight loss story but it's just been a constant struggle most of my life. I'm now doing crossfit and eating paleo and have never felt better about myself!

  4. Thanks for sharing. There are days when I get sick of having to eat. I'm not over weight but I hear you. Seems each year I pick up extra pounds. It's hard for me to give up sugar and flour. I've been doing Ironman training for the past 11 years. I've completed 9 of them. 2.5 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride followed by a marathon. So what's the big deal? My fault is not eating regularly. I've been told by nutritionist friend that I need to get in a certain amount of protein and carbs every 3 hours. Keeping a crazy work schedule plus massive training results in poor eating habits. Maybe you have inspired me to have a daily meal plan. In any event I'm sure you'll figure out what needs to be done and get the job done. Be happy with who you are right now and be in the moment. Love ya - I'm 67 years old

  6. When a waitress overheard me talking about a baby shower I was hosting, she asked me when MY baby was due. Needless to say, I wasn't pleased.

My wedding is in 22 days, and since January 1, I've lost 30 lbs, in huge part to MyFitnessPal keeping me on track!

    You can do it!

  7. I'm 5'8" and 42 yrs old - diagnosed diabetic in 1997 (when I got so sick I ended up in the hospital for 3 days), seriously overweight and didn't care about my health. Three years ago weighed 250 and wore an insulin pump (not that it motivated me to monitor my diabetes or health); also high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Started running a little bit - could barely finish a mile, but little by little it clicked and started to drop lbs. - Now run 9 miles most days. In 2012, I ran 352 out of 366 days - as of Christmastime last year, have dropped nearly 75 lbs, completely off insulin and completely off all medication. Some days are still a struggle, but it has changed my life and I will never go back! Good luck to you!

  8. There is nothing better than eating healthy and staying fit. But stuffing yourself with loads of calories in the form of junk food, beverages, cream etc is an injustice to the poor body. And then you start worrying about your waistline and fitting-in to your favorite skinny clothes. Start thinking what a difference it would make if you have a balanced diet with appropriate amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Wouldn't you look wonderfully in shape, young and attractive? Then what is stopping you? Get up. Get that weighing machine, check your body mass ratio, start monitoring what you eat and start feeling lighter and better.

  9. Best of luck to you, Jaymee! I am working on the same goals as you, and find the MyFitnessPal app to be a great way to stay accountable to yourself. I too have experienced the horror of having my jeans rip while getting into a vehicle. It's the worst thing ever! Looking forward to hearing about your journey towards your goals...I know you will succeed!

  15. My Niece (3 year old) and her Mom (currently 4 months pregnant) just visited our family from overseas. We were waiting for our burger orders and my Niece asked me if I also have a baby in my tummy! Of course, people around me were looking at us and eagerly waiting for my answer. So, I reply, "no but I sure have some belly fats..." hahaha....yes, it was funny, but embarrassing as well. Oh well, I better start getting on my own Slim Fast program!

  38. I'd love to be able to be confident enough to go out swimming with the family. There's a Great Wolf Lodge nearby and my daughter has been wanting to go. *sigh* I have so much weight to lose it looks like weight loss surgery is the answer for me. However, maybe it's not..I've got two family members that have botched surgeries and horrible effects from it all. I wish I was one of those naturally skinny people.

  39. The craziest reason I ever wanted to lose weight was to impress my daughter's old boyfriend. They were in high school together and after they broke up he and I still talked occasionally. He used to flirt with me and it made me feel like I was still pretty hot. I moved away and we only saw each other every couple of years. I wanted him to think I still looked pretty good.
